In the vicinity of Muro de Alcoy there are many things to see and do; weather you are interested in culture or nature; you will find it all here.
The largest protected nature park of the Comunidad Valenciana, the Sierra Mariola, is just around the corner. The park was opened on 8-1-2002 and measures 16.000 hectares. The largest mountain is the Montcabrer of almost 1400 meters. The Sierra Mariola has many interesting things to visit like ice caves, masias, fortresses and hermit´s cells.
In the ice caves people used to store ice, so that in summer food could be transported and kept fresh. The masias or farmhouses were the homes of mountain families who were fully capable to eat and live from the things they traditionally grew in the mountains.
There are several scenic routes in the Sierra which allow you to walk for a maximum of 4 hours. These routes allow you to discover the many water springs like Molí Mató, and discover the interesting flora en fauna. Some 1400 species of flowers and plants have been identified in the Sierra. There are also many birds like eagles, owls and goshawks, reptiles and snakes and other mammals like rabbits, badgers, marters, foxes and wild boars.
There are also many picturesque small villages to be discovered like Bocairent with its renowned mountain caves, 53 in total. Or Ontinyent, which in Spain is best known for its ´Gigantes´, large dolls or Giants which are carried in processions during festivals twice a year.
